Citroën C3 XTR Posts Best Urban Gasoline Economy in Independent Test

Citroën says its C3 XTR topped the urban gasoline-economy measurement for naturally aspirated 1.0-liter compact cars in Brazil’s 2026 Folha Mauá ranking. The result was 15.4 kilometers per liter, or roughly 36.2 miles per U.S. gallon after a straight unit conversion.
The company highlighted the result in an October 7, 2026, release. An independent report from Folha de S.Paulo provides useful context: the Chevrolet Onix was the category’s overall leader and the most economical on the road, while the Citroën recorded the lowest gasoline consumption in the city. Chiefs Review has not driven or independently tested either vehicle.
What the Folha Mauá test measured
Folha says the 2026 ranking covered 81 vehicles tested from the second half of July 2025 through the first half of July 2026 in partnership with the Instituto Mauá de Tecnologia. The urban route covered 27 kilometers. The road test covered 31 kilometers at 90 km/h, and flex-fuel cars were measured separately with gasoline and ethanol.
That makes the C3 XTR’s 15.4-km/L figure more useful than a manufacturer estimate, but it still should not be compared directly with an EPA rating. The route, fuel, speed, climate, traffic and calculation method differ from U.S. regulatory testing. The converted 36.2-mpg figure only translates the unit; it does not turn the Brazilian result into an EPA rating.
Citroën’s headline needs context
Citroën’s October 7 release describes the C3 XTR as the most economical 1.0-liter compact in the 2026 ranking and also says it achieved the category’s best road-economy result. Folha’s own October 5 report is narrower: it names the Chevrolet Onix the overall category winner and the most economical on the road, with the C3 XTR taking the gasoline urban-economy distinction.
Because Folha and the Instituto Mauá conducted the tests, their published breakdown is the stronger source for interpreting the ranking. The defensible takeaway is that the C3 XTR led this class in urban gasoline economy, not that it swept every economy and performance measure.
What the Brazil-market C3 XTR includes
The 2027 C3 XTR sold in Brazil uses a naturally aspirated 1.0-liter Firefly flex-fuel engine and a manual transmission. Citroën lists output of up to 75 cv, a 315-liter cargo rating under the VDA method, 15-inch dark-finished alloy wheels and mixed-use Pirelli Scorpion ATR tires.
For the 2027 model year, the XTR also received a standard rear parking sensor, a revised interface for its 10.25-inch Citroën Connect touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and two added colors: Polar White and Sting Gray. An August manufacturer release listed the XTR at R$93,990, while Folha’s October ranking report cited R$101,990. Brazilian pricing and incentives can change, so shoppers should confirm the current amount locally.
This specification and test result apply to the Brazilian market. Citroën has not announced this C3 XTR for the United States. Readers following efficiency-focused vehicles in the U.S. can compare the published details for the 2027 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid and the sales context behind the Ford Maverick Hybrid’s latest quarterly result.
What shoppers should take from the result
The C3 XTR’s strongest verified result is urban gasoline economy. Buyers should still weigh acceleration, safety equipment, highway consumption, tire cost, rear-seat space and local pricing. A single category win shows where the car performed well; it does not establish that it is the best compact for every driver.
