FIAT Multiplay Turns a Seven-Seat Family Concept Into a Pickup

FIAT’s Multiplay concept approaches family-vehicle flexibility in a literal way: part of the rear body moves. The 4.45-metre study can change from an enclosed 6+1-seat family vehicle into a four-seat pickup with an open cargo bed.
FIAT presented the Multiplay at Stellantis’ “Night Before” event ahead of the 2026 Paris Motor Show. The company describes it as a laboratory for future ideas, not a preview of a specific production model. No engine, battery, range, output, price or launch date has been announced.
A sliding rear module changes the layout
The key feature is what FIAT calls the C-Pillar “Metamorfosi” architecture. A rear module slides lengthwise to convert the enclosed passenger configuration into a pickup layout. In family mode the concept carries six conventional occupants plus a flexible seventh element. In pickup mode it keeps four seats and creates an open bed for bicycles, sports equipment or bulky cargo.
The rear spoiler is also designed to rotate into a rack capable of carrying two bicycles. That reinforces the concept’s basic idea: components should perform more than one job instead of adding separate accessories.
FIAT has not explained how the sliding structure would be sealed, crash-tested or certified for production. Those would be significant engineering questions for any road-going version, so the transformation system should be viewed as a design study rather than a confirmed feature.
The cabin focuses on families and pets
The “Petsenger seat” can serve as a child-seat mounting point, pet area, table or storage unit. Part of its cushion detaches for use as a leash, while a folding pet bowl is stored in a door compartment.
FIAT also rethinks the third row. The rear area is intended to accommodate two children and, when necessary, an adult. Up front, the passenger seat can turn around when parked and use the dashboard as a backrest, creating what the company calls the “Sunseat” beneath the panoramic roof.
Most of the soft components use single-material textiles made with a no-stitch 3D-knit process. Waterproof finishes appear in the children and pet areas, while a display integrated into the dashboard disappears from view when the vehicle is off.
A new interpretation of the Multipla idea
The name and packaging philosophy refer to FIAT’s space-efficient 600 Multipla from 1956 and the six-seat Multipla introduced in 1998. The new concept is much larger, but the goal is similar: fit more passenger and cargo flexibility into one footprint.
Whether the moving rear body reaches a showroom is unknown. The more realistic near-term takeaway may be the smaller ideas — modular seating, integrated pet storage, reconfigurable cargo accessories and parts designed to serve multiple functions.
