Verstappen Edges Leclerc for 50th F1 Pole in Singapore

By Chiefs Review Editorial Team
Max Verstappen took the 50th pole position of his Formula 1 career on October 10, 2026, beating Charles Leclerc by 0.054 seconds in qualifying for the Singapore Grand Prix. It is Verstappen’s first Grand Prix pole at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
The Red Bull driver set a 1:31.373 on his first Q3 run. Leclerc improved late to a 1:31.427 for Ferrari, while Lewis Hamilton qualified third with a 1:31.496 after leading both Q1 and Q2.
Verstappen delivered when Q3 began
Ferrari controlled the earlier stages of qualifying. Hamilton’s 1:31.529 led Q2, and Verstappen reported poor gearshifts as he worked through the session. The problem did not prevent him from advancing, and his first Q3 attempt became the pole lap.
Leclerc found enough time on his final run to move ahead of Hamilton, but he remained 0.054 seconds short. Kimi Antonelli qualified fourth for Mercedes, 0.189 seconds behind Verstappen, with McLaren’s Lando Norris fifth.
The pole follows Verstappen’s win in Saturday’s weather-delayed Sprint. Chiefs Review’s earlier report covers how Verstappen won the chaotic Singapore Sprint as nine cars retired.
Russell’s penalty reshapes the top 10
George Russell set the sixth-fastest Q3 time, but Mercedes had already confirmed a back-of-grid penalty tied to a power-unit change. That moves the drivers behind him forward when the official starting grid is issued.
Based on the qualifying classification and Russell’s announced penalty, the provisional top 10 for Sunday is:
- Max Verstappen — Red Bull Racing
- Charles Leclerc — Ferrari
- Lewis Hamilton — Ferrari
- Kimi Antonelli — Mercedes
- Lando Norris — McLaren
- Oscar Piastri — McLaren
- Pierre Gasly — Alpine
- Liam Lawson — Racing Bulls
- Arvid Lindblad — Racing Bulls
- Nico Hülkenberg — Audi
The final grid remains subject to the FIA’s formal publication and any additional penalties.
Hadjar’s qualifying run ended without a time
Isack Hadjar was unable to record a representative lap after reporting a gearbox problem in the second Red Bull. Team principal Laurent Mekies told Reuters that the issue left Hadjar with no opportunity to continue his season-long run of Q3 appearances.
Fernando Alonso, Alexander Albon, Lance Stroll, Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas were also eliminated in Q1. Hülkenberg narrowly missed Q3 but is set to move into the top 10 on the grid after Russell’s penalty.
Why the front row matters at Marina Bay
Singapore’s narrow street layout makes track position unusually valuable. Verstappen and Leclerc will share the front row, with both Ferrari drivers positioned to challenge Red Bull into the opening sequence of corners.
The 2026 Singapore Grand Prix is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. local time on Sunday, October 11. Verstappen will be making his 250th Formula 1 start and will attempt to convert his first Singapore Grand Prix pole into his first full-length victory at the circuit.
