Volkswagen Recalls 22,524 ID.4 EVs Over Battery Fire Risk

Volkswagen is recalling an estimated 22,524 ID.4 electric SUVs in the United States because the high-voltage battery may fail and lead to a vehicle fire. The campaign covers certain 2023–2026 model-year vehicles, and owners are being told to limit charging to 80 percent until a repair is completed.
Which ID.4 models are included?
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration lists campaign number 26V630000 and Volkswagen campaign number 93EX. The filing covers certain ID.4 vehicles from the 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 model years; it does not mean every ID.4 from those years is included.
Owners should check the 17-character vehicle identification number at NHTSA’s official recall lookup or contact a Volkswagen dealer. NHTSA’s record says affected VINs became searchable on October 6.
The temporary charging instruction
Until the repair is available and completed, Volkswagen advises affected owners to charge the battery to no more than 80 percent. The official record does not include a do-not-drive instruction or a park-outside warning for this campaign, so owners should follow the specific directions tied to their VIN rather than borrowing restrictions from a different recall.
NHTSA describes the risk in direct terms: a high-voltage battery failure could cause a vehicle fire, increasing the risk of injury. The agency’s public summary does not identify a complete repair procedure yet.
Repair timing is still being developed
The remedy remains under development. Interim owner letters are expected to be mailed beginning November 27, 2026, with another notice to follow when the final repair is available. Safety recall repairs are performed without charge for covered vehicles.
Owners can also call Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 and reference campaign 93EX. A dealer or NHTSA VIN result is the best way to confirm whether a particular vehicle is included and whether the campaign is still open.
Why precise recall identification matters
EV battery campaigns can carry different precautions even when the model and general fire risk sound similar. Charging limits, fast-charging restrictions, parking guidance and repair procedures may differ by campaign. Owners should use the campaign number on their notice and avoid assuming that instructions from another ID.4 recall apply here.
