Marc Márquez Wins Indonesia Sprint and Takes MotoGP Lead

By Chiefs Review Editorial Team
Marc Márquez won the Indonesian MotoGP Sprint at Mandalika on October 10, 2026, a result that moved the Ducati Lenovo rider into the championship lead for the first time this season. He now has 343 points, four more than Aprilia’s Jorge Martín.
Márquez’s victory was his eighth Sprint win of 2026 and his first at the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit. Trackhouse Aprilia rider Ai Ogura finished second, while Fabio Di Giannantonio took third for VR46 Racing on his birthday.
Turn 1 changed the shape of the Sprint
Raúl Fernández started from his first MotoGP pole after a 1:28.852 qualifying lap, with Marco Bezzecchi alongside him. Their advantage disappeared at the first corner when the two Aprilia riders collided and crashed out. MotoGP’s official report said both riders were okay.
The incident opened the way for Martín, who had started fifth, to take the lead. Márquez emerged in second and initially had to respond as Martín pulled more than a second clear.
With five laps remaining, Martín slowed and allowed Márquez through. Reuters reported that Martín made the move to avoid a possible tire-pressure penalty. Martín later closed the gap but ran wide at Turn 15, dropping behind Ogura and Di Giannantonio before recovering to fourth.
Márquez completes a 102-point comeback
The 12 points for the Sprint victory lifted Márquez to 343, while Martín’s fourth place left him on 339. That four-point margin represents a major turnaround: Márquez trailed then-leader Bezzecchi by 102 points after May’s Italian Grand Prix, according to Reuters.
The result also breaks an unhappy Saturday pattern for Márquez in Indonesia. The official series report described it as his first Sprint win at Mandalika. He still faces a separate challenge in Sunday’s full-distance Grand Prix, where a victory pays 25 points and second place pays 20.

What comes next
The Indonesian Grand Prix is scheduled for 3 p.m. local time on October 11. Fernández and Bezzecchi retain their qualifying positions for the main race, so the riders eliminated at Turn 1 in the Sprint will again start from the front row.
The championship lead can therefore change again on Sunday. Márquez’s four-point advantage is smaller than the difference between first and second place in a Grand Prix, leaving both leading riders in control of their own title fight.
